Mission Notes January 2013

Hi from Germany,

We were at home for the Holidays and glad to be together - just missing Zack our oldest who is in the US. We have traveled extensively this year, certainly more than any previous year. Michelle and I just got back from the last trip of the year – Israel, where we spent 5 days with her brother Joe Morris and his wife Colleen. It was a multi purpose trip and all went well.

For this Missions Notes I want to give you a thought and then just some pictures (see link below) to show a few spots we have been this year ministering Gods Word. We are extremely fortunate to be where we are, doing what we are doing.

Thought!
Over the years we have learned what I think to be one of the great truths of successful ministry or building any organization really. It is the Team. The Team is greater than just a Partnership between 2 people as long as it functions as it should. It is the primary building block of any organization. I like what Mia Hamm said about being a member of a team. Do you remember her from the women’s soccer team in the Olympics? She said:

I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team, I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion.

Mia Hamm

We believe this is true where missions is concerned and our connection with all of you reading this. We are a team! It is tricky making a team out of people who don’t get to spend much time together. But our accomplishments together show the team is working.

Here is one definition of a Team.

A group of people with a full set of complementary skills required to complete a task, job, or project.

Team members (1) operate with a high degree of interdependence, (2) share authority and responsibility for self-management, (3) are accountable
for the collective performance, and (4) work toward a common goal and shared rewards(s). A team becomes more than just a collection of people when a strong sense of mutual commitment creates synergy, thus generating performance greater than the sum of the performance of its individual members.

I think this defines very well how all of us work together. The pictures are usually of us ministering somewhere in the world but we could not do this without all the complimentary skills of team members operating at a high degree of interdependence, sharing responsibility for the common goal of
The Great Commission.

All the pictures we show should really be large group pictures. You may not have physically been to different part of the US, Europe, Africa and the Middle East this year …. But you were in all of those places with us touching thousands of lives, exploring new territory for Bible School expansion, teaching leaders, seeing the Lost get Saved, the Saved getting Established, the Established being Trained and the Trained being helped into their Position in the greater work of the Team.

We are glad you are a part of this great team. There is much to be accomplished and we need to keep this team growing.

Enjoy a few pictures from your travels in 2012 http://grunewald.org/discover/2012photogallery!

We love and appreciate you,

Mission Notes January/February/March 2012

Hi again from Germany,

We trust this first quarter of the New Year has started off great for all of you. As we all continue to live our lives, fulfill our life's missions, reach our goals, see dreams come true and of course overcome along the way, are we doing this with joy? The presence of God in our lives should always be a source of joy in the midst of whatever is going on in the rest of our lives. Smile by faith if you have to, it will do you and others good.

RBTC Classes

During January and early February Michelle and I taught classes in Bonn and Munich, Germany, Wels, Austria and Zurich, Switzerland.

Michelle was teaching "Prayer" and I was teaching "Principles of Leadership and Team Development". Prayer is taught in both 1st and 2nd year, Leadership and Team Development is a 2nd year course.

A new RBTC Campus opened in Hamburg, Germany this month. This is the furthest north Campus in Germany. Later this year we will open one in the very southern part of the country near the German, Swiss and French border in Loerrach, Germany.

Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Also during January a group of 12 of us flew to Tanzania and hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. The team was made up of 7 Germans and 5 Americans. We had a great time together and all made it to the top. From starting gate back to starting gate we hiked 43 miles and went almost 13,000 feet in elevation to the summit of over 19,000 ft. The last section was the most difficult going from 15,500 ft to the summit and leaning at 11:30PM reaching the summit at 5:00AM. After a few minutes you have to head back down due to altitude. We made it back to camp by 8:30AM took a short nap and hiked another 71/2 miles down to 12,200 ft for the night. Our two sons, Zack and Spencer, were a part of this and it was a great experience for them. I was glad to have them along, to see a small part of Africa and to physically challenge themselves with something like this.

Check out my Facebook page for more pictures.

Trips like this have purpose besides the adventure. They give everyone an opportunity to test themselves physically, mentally, socially and spiritually. And you get a perspective of life outside of your normal view. It's worth the effort. As we plan more trips in the future consider taking part. Where are we going next? Not sure but maybe later this year we will have some ideas.

Expansion

As God has expanded the vision in us and added some responsibilities we know this also involves more than us. That is simply how He works. It took me a long time to embrace this because I really didn't want to ask others for help. I hope I am wiser today. Not only do I understand God and His ways better today but I also understand my own limitations better. He has required us all to bear fruit in our lives, in prayer, in actions, in relationships... I am asking you today to become a part of what God is doing in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. To pray, lend a talent for a time, five financially or any or all of the above. If you are already involved - THANKS because you are making a difference in many lives and helping to fulfill the Great Commission.

April, May and June will involve a lot of travel in Europe and Africa - keep up with us on FB.

Send us an email and let us know you want to help. Don't let money stop you; there are many other things that can be done. If we cannot find a "fit" for you right now, then I would think we could in the near future.

If you can give financially here are a few options:

We are thankful for all of you and our growing relationship. And may 2012 be all you are expecting to be and more!

Mission Notes January 2012

Happy New Year from Germany,

It's been a busy couple of months.

Europe and Africa Directors Meeting

In the beginning of October we had the European Directors meeting in Bonn. This year we invited the African Directors also and had a great time of doing business, strategizing, praying and eating together. We love and appreciate everyone of them. This is a great group of leaders who have decided to work together rather than alone. The results have been evident.  For the first time we have over 1000 students combined in all the 27 RBTC Campuses.  Just think where we can go from here!

Book Translation Project

God loves Big Projects.
Over the years we have been a part of the book translation project in Germany.  With the expansion of the Campuses around Europe we knew we would need more books for the students plus the general population.  We floated around a few ideas over the years but it just didn't seem right to us.  Then earlier this year we got to talking about the need for about 20 different titles in all 38 language zones in Europe. That seemed to strike a chord in our hearts so we are going forward with this big project. It will be a blessing to many!  Rough figures are $1 - 1.5 million to get us a long way down the road.  Have a country on your heart? Let us know. More on this to come. We will have an attachment in one of the future Missions Notes that show the progress for each language zone.

I imagine most people are familiar with Martin Luther Kings Jr.'s "I have a Dream".  It probably seemed impossible to him but often times that what dreams are ... impossible!  Over the years I have learned to like and embrace the "impossible dreams" more than the "regular dreams". It seems like the impossible dreams tap into the dreams of God and it is there you find the inner desire to do something you would never otherwise have an interest to do, to tackle something beyond your abilities, find the place that stirs you to action and find the grace that is needed to do some thing way bigger than you should normally do.

A great email

We received this email from some missionary friends and I thought you might enjoy it.

Hey Mission People,

From one of the rough water swimmers to all of you swimmers, Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!

I was reading a book lately, True Religion by Palmer Chinchen.
I have NOT met him, but it is great to read his book.
The book is subtitled, "Taking pieces of Heaven to places of Hell on earth".

He gave one great illustration.
He grew up in Africa. He and his brothers went on a rafting trip down the Zambezi River.
They boarded in the river right after Victoria Falls.

The raft guide told them that when the raft flips over, make sure to stay in the rapids.
"When the raft flips, stay in the rough water. Because it is in the stagnant water that the crocs wait for you. They are large and hungry. Even when the raft flips, stay in the rough water."

To all of you who prefer the rapid, rough water, keep pressing on!
As Wayne Meyers says, "Better to in God's will in a river with crocs, than on a sofa in USA out of God's will!"

I am impressed with you pushing on, I am encouraged by your faith in God, I am heartened by your willingness, and I am challenged by you when I feel like swimming for the calm waters. Thanks for being my example!

Merry Christmas,

Quotes

"The Bible says, ‘Where there is no vision, the people perish.’ Have you a vision? And are you undeviatingly pressing and pushing toward its accomplishment? Dreaming alone will not get you there. Mix your dreams with determination and action."
- B.C. Forbes

"It's kind of fun to do the impossible."
- Walt Disney

"Adversity causes some men to break, others to break records."
- William A. Ward

"Adversity introduces a man to himself."

Quotes

"Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work."

Daniel Hudson Burnham (1846-1912)

He was the pioneer of Urban development.

He created urban plans for Washington DC, Chicago, Cleveland, San Francisco and Manila—all before the profession of urban planning existed. In fact, some say that he invented it.

Impossible

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it.

Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion.

Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare.

Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary.  Impossible is nothing.

That’s a nice quote but we know it this way.

Mark 9:23

Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

Mission Notes April 2011

March of the $10
When I was out for a walk the other morning I was thinking about how to get more people involved in this part of the Great Commission that we are responsible for.  I was thinking we certainly need more human resources, that is what Jesus had his disciples start to pray for in Matthew 9 ... pray that the Lord of the harvest would send forth more laborers into His harvest. And we also need more money, both major donors and the faithful ones that keep it all going every month.  We love to look back and see all that the Lord has done but not for to long since there is such a long way to go.

What if all those who aren't involved in anyway started by praying for 10 minutes and giving $10.00/month?  Would that make a difference? YES!!

Let me illustrate. Do you know the story (short version) of the March of Dimes?

The March of Dimes is one of the most successful and well-known nonprofit foundations in the United States. It was founded to fight polio, and after the disease was controlled by the invention of a vaccine, the March of Dimes turned its efforts to eradicating birth defects.

I don't know if anyone thought Polio could be dealt with so successfully in a short period of time.  But when so many people got involved by giving, even a dime, it made a HUGE difference in the research and development of a vaccine.

What difference can a lot of people make by praying for 10 minutes and giving $10.00/month in an area of the world where only 4% are born again?  One way to find out.  We have a plan that we are expanding on greatly this next year, it is a great time to become a part.

How and where to join this Team please go to the bottom of the email.

God's geographical view of Greater Europe. Our first phase goal is to establish 100 RHEMA Bible Training Center Campuses in this green area by 2018. There are other phases like evangelism and church planting, that I will share more about soon. Save the Lost, Establish the Saved, Train the Established and Position the Trained.

Spencer and Gabi to Panama in July
Spencer and Gabi are getting geared up for their missions trip to Panama in July.  They are looking forward to seeing a completely different culture than what they have grown up in and how the gospel can be preached to the people on these small islands off the coast of Panama. They are both doing great and God is speaking to their hearts about their future.

You can be a part of this trip thru giving also. http://grunewald.org/invest

Kilimanjaro - January 2012
This is a repeat of last month.  Might have some more specific info during May.

In January 2012 we (Zack, Spencer and I) are going to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa.  For me this has been a long time desire.  Why you ask?  Not sure, just always wanted to do it. Wish I could have done it 30 years ago but I didn't so now will be a good time since both boys will be able to come along.

Now if you're saying, "I want to come along also", well, come along!  One of our RHEMA Germany graduates and Pastors did the climb about 4 years ago with some men from his church and he is organizing the trip.  This is not a technical climb, no ropes or anything like that it is just a 5 or 6 day hike to the top.  You will go thru every climate zone and finally reach 19,341 feet. Do some reading up on Kili so you have a good idea what it involves. The following paragraph is from Wikipedia.

Kilimanjaro, with its three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira, is an inactive stratovolcano in north-eastern Tanzania and the highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 metres or 19,341 ft above sea level (the Uhuru Peak/Kibo Peak).[3] Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain as well as the 4th most prominent mountain in the world, rising 5,882 metres or 19,298 ft from the base.

How much will it cost? We are working on that.  For now I would like to start an "I am interested list".  I would need your names and email address's.  Please put in the subject line "Kilimanjaro".  After we get the final info I will let all the interested know and turn the list into "I'm going to Kili" list.

Right now there are over 20 people on the "I am interested list".

Mt. Kilimanjaro

What's this? No, it's not the Richter scale.

Here is a picture of the Euro/USD exchange rate from the inception of the Euro in 1999. If you are a missionary or business person who lives overseas and is paid in $$ this has not been a steady 12 years. The higher the line goes on this chart the worse it gets for the exchange rate.  The best was for awhile in 2001 when you could buy 1 Euro for about 84 cents. Today 1 Euro costs about $1.45  This is one very good reason why a person's trust should NOT be in money.

With the exchange rate, the cheap gas right now is $8.07/Gallon. Makes a person want to laugh very loud.
